1Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices which they had prepared. 2And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. 3They entered, but did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments: 5They were afraid, and bowed their faces to the earth, and the men said to them, Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6He is not here, but has risen: remember how he spoke to you when he was still in Galilee, 7Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. 8And they remembered his words, 9And returned from the tomb, and told all these things to the eleven, and to all the rest. 10They were Mary of Magdala, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women with them, who told these things to the apostles. 11And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they did not believe them. 12Then Peter arose, and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering to himself at that which had come to pass. 13And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem. 14And they talked together of all these things which had happened. 15And it came to pass, that, while they were conversing and discussing, Jesus himself drew near, and went along with them. 16But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17And he said to them, What is it that you are discussing with each other as you walk? And they stood still, looking downcast. 18And one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, Are you the only visitor in Jerusalem who does not know the things which have come to pass there in these days? 19And he said to them, What things? And they said to him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: 20And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. 21But we trusted that it was he who would redeem Israel: and beside all this, today is the third day since these things happened. 22Yea, and certain women of our company astonished us, for they were at the tomb early; 23And they did not find his body. They came back, saying that they had seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. 24And certain of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found it just as the women had said: but him they did not see. 25Then he said to them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: 26Was it not necessary for the Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? 27And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them all the things concerning himself in the scriptures. 28And they drew near to the village, where they were going: and he acted as though he would have gone farther. 29But they urged him strongly, saying, Stay with us: for it is getting toward evening, and the day is nearly over. And he went in to stay with them. 30And it came to pass, as he was at table with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and broke it, and gave it to them. 31And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished out of their sight. 32And they said to one another, Did not our hearts burn within us, while he talked with us along the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? 33They rose up that same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, along with those who were with them, 34Saying, The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon. 35And they told what had happened on the road, and how he was recognized by them in the breaking of bread. 36And as they spoke of this, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, Peace be with you. 37But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed that they were seeing a spirit. 38And he said to them, Why are you troubled? and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: touch me, and see; for a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see that I have. 40And when he had thus spoken, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41And while they still did not believe because of joy, and marvelled, he said to them, Have you anything here to eat? 42And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish. 43And he took it, and ate it before them. 44He said to them, These are the words which I spoke to you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled which are written about me in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms. 45Then he opened their minds, that they might understand the scriptures, 46And said to them, Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer, and rise from the dead on the third day: 47And that repentance for forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48You are witnesses of these things. 49And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but stay in the city, until you are clothed with power from on high. 50And he led them out as far as Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. 51And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven. 52And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy: 53And were continually in the temple, praising God.
