1These things spake Jesus, and went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where there was a garden, into which he and his disciples entered. 2And Judas also, the betrayer, knew the place; because Jesus often there met with his disciples. 3Then Judas received a regiment, and from the presence of the chief priests and Pharisees he had officials; and he came to the place with lanterns and lamps and weapons. 4And Jesus, as he knew every thing that was to befall him, went forth and said to them: Whom seek ye? 5They say to him: Jesus the Nazarean. Jesus said to them: I am he. And Judas the betrayer was also standing with them. 6And when Jesus said to them, I am he, they drew back and fell upon the ground. 7And again Jesus asked them: Whom seek ye? And they said: Jesus the Nazarean. 8Jesus said to them: I have told you that I am he; and if ye seek me, let these go away: 9that the speech might be fulfilled, which he uttered: Of them, whom thou hast given me, I have lost not even one. 10And Simon Cephas had upon him a sword; and he drew it, and smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. And the servant's name was Malchus. 11And Jesus said to Cephas: Put the sword into its sheath. The cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it? 12Then the regiment and the chiliarchs and the officials of the Jews laid hold of Jesus, and bound him; 13and they led him first to the presence of Annas; for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was the high priest of that year. 14And it was Caiaphas who counselled the Jews, that it was expedient, one man should die for the people. 15And Simon Cephas and one other of the disciples went after Jesus. And that other disciple knew the high priest; and he entered with Jesus into the hall. 16But Simon stood without at the door; and that other disciple, who knew the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper and brought in Simon. 17And the maid who kept the door, said to Simon: Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? And he said: I am not. 18And the servants and officials were standing, and had placed a fire to warm themselves 19And the high priest interrogated Jesus respecting his disciples, and respecting his doctrine. 20And Jesus said to him: I have discoursed openly with the people, and have at all times taught in the synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews assemble; and I have uttered nothing in private. 21Why dost thou interrogate me? Ask them who have heard, what I said to them: lo, they know what I have said. 22And as he said these things, one of the officials standing by, smote the cheek of Jesus, and said to him: Givest thou such an answer to the high priest? 23Jesus replied, and said to him: If I have spoken evil bear witness of that evil; but if well, why smitest thou me? 24Now Annas had sent Jesus bound to Caiaphas the high priest. 25And Simon Cephas was standing and warming himself; and they said to him: Art not thou also one of his disciples? And he denied, and said: I am not. 26And one of the servants of the high priest, a kinsman of him whose ear Simon cut off, said to him: Did I not see thee with him in the garden? 27And again Simon denied: and at that moment the cock crew. 28And they led Jesus from the presence of Caiaphas unto the Praetorium; and it was morning. But they did not enter the Praetorium, lest they should defile themselves before they had eaten the passover. 29And Pilate went forth to them without, and said to them: What accusation have ye against this man? 30They replied, and said to him: If he were not a malefactor, we should not have delivered him up to thee. 31Pilate said to them: Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews said to him: It is not lawful for us to put a man to death: 32that the speech of Jesus might be fulfilled, when he made known by what death he was to die. 33And Pilate went into the Praetorium, and called Jesus, and said to him: Art thou the king of the Jews? 34Jesus said to him: Sayest thou this of thyself, or have others said it to thee of me? 35Pilate said to him: Am I a Jew? Thy countrymen and the chief priests have delivered thee to me. What hast thou done? 36Jesus said to him: My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have fought, that I might not be delivered up to the Jews: but now, my kingdom is not from hence. 37Pilate said to him: Then thou art a king? Jesus said to him: Thou hast said, that I am a king. For this was I born; and for this came I into the world, that I might bear testimony to the truth. Every one that is of the truth, heareth my voice. 38Pilate said to him: What is the truth? And as he said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them: I find not any crime in him. 39And ye have a custom that I should release one to you at the passover; will ye, therefore, that I release to you this king of the Jews? 40And they all cried out, and said: Not this man, but Barabbas. Now this Barabbas was a robber.
