1Verily, verily, I say to you, That he who doth not enter by the door into the fold of the flock, but climbeth up in some other place, he is a thief and a robber. 2But he that entereth by the door, is the shepherd of the flock. 3And to him the door-keeper openeth the door; and the sheep hear his voice. And he calleth the sheep by their names, and leadeth them out. 4And when he hath led out his flock, he goeth before it; and his sheep follow him, because they know his voice. 5But after a stranger the flock will not follow, but it fleeth from him; because it knoweth not the voice of a stranger. 6This allegory spake Jesus to them; but they knew not what he said to them. 7And Jesus said to them again: Verily, verily, I say to you, That I am the door of the flock. 8All those who have come, were thieves and robbers: but the flock did not hear them. 9I am the door: and if any enter by me, he will live, and will come in and go out, and will find pasture. 10The thief cometh not, but that he may steal, and kill, and destroy. I have come, that they may have life, and may have that which is excellent. 11I am a good shepherd. A good shepherd exposeth his life for the sheep. 12But a hireling, who is not the shepherd, and to whom the sheep do not belong, when he seeth the wolf coming, leaveth the flock, and fleeth; and the wolf cometh, and teareth, and disperseth the flock. 13And a hireling fleeth, because he is a hireling, and hath no concern for the flock. 14I am a good shepherd; and I know my own sheep, and am known by my own. 15As my Father knoweth me, so know I my Father; and I expose my life for the flock. 16And I have other sheep, which are not of this fold: and them also I must bring; and they will hear my voice; and the whole will be one flock, and one shepherd. 17For this cause my Father loveth me, that I lay down my life, to resume it again. 18There is no one that taketh it from me; but I lay it down of my own pleasure: for I have authority to lay it down, and authority to resume it again; because I have received this command from my Father. 19And again there was a division among the Jews, on account of these sayings. 20And many of them said: He hath a demon, and is wholly beside himself; why hear ye him? 21But others said: These are not the discourses of a demoniac: can a demon open the eyes of one blind? 22And the feast of the dedication was held at Jerusalem, and it was winter. 23And Jesus walked in the temple, in the porch of Solomon. 24And the Jews gathered around him; and said to him: how long holdest thou our mind in suspense? If thou art the Messiah, tell us plainly. 25Jesus answered, and said to them: I have told you, and ye did not believe. The works which I do in the name of my Father, they testify of me 26But ye do not believe, because ye are not of my sheep, as I have said to you. 27My sheep hear my voice: and I know them: and they go after me. 28And I give to them life eternal: and they will never be lost: nor will any one pluck them from my hand. 29For my Father, who gave them to me, is greater than all; nor can any pluck from my Father's hand. 30I and my Father are one. 31And again the Jews took up stones, to stone him. 32Jesus said to them: Many good works have I showed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? 33The Jews said to him: It is not on account of good works, that we stone thee: but because thou blasphemest; and, whilst thou art a man, thou makest thyself God. 34Jesus said to them: Is it not written in your law, I have said, Ye are gods? 35If he called them gods, because the word of God was with them, and the scripture cannot be nullified; 36do ye say to him, whom the Father, hath sanctified and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said to you, I am the Son of God? 37And if I do not the works of my Father, believe me not. 38But if I do them, although ye believe not me, yet believe the works; that ye may know and believe, that my Father is in me, and I in my Father. 39And again they sought to lay hold of him; but he escaped out of their hands; 40and retired to the other side of the Jordan, to the place where John at first baptized, and tarried there. 41And many persons came to him: and they said, John indeed wrought not even one sign; but every thing that John said of his man, was true. 42And many believed on him.
